The Divine Sparks of Creation
In Lurianic Kabbalah, the 288 Sparks (ניצוצות, Nitzotzot) represent the fragmented divine light that scattered throughout creation during the Shevirat HaKelim (Breaking of the Vessels). These sparks are holy points of divine energy trapped within the material world, waiting to be elevated and returned to their source through human spiritual work.
Each of the 72 Names of God (Shemhamphorasch) manifests uniquely in each of the Four Worlds (Atziluth, Beriah, Yetzirah, Assiah), creating 288 distinct divine forces. Each Spark represents a specific aspect of divine consciousness operating at a particular level of reality.

Tikkun: Gathering the Sparks
The process of Tikkun (repair) involves identifying, elevating, and reuniting these scattered sparks with their divine source. This is accomplished through:
- Torah Study - Engaging with sacred texts illuminates sparks of wisdom
- Mitzvot - Performing commandments releases sparks trapped in physical matter
- Prayer & Meditation - Kavvanah (intention) elevates sparks through consciousness
- Ethical Action - Acts of kindness (chesed) gather sparks from relationships
- Holy Eating - Mindful consumption elevates sparks within food
When all 288 sparks are gathered and restored, the cosmic repair is complete, and the Messianic Age (Olam HaBa) is ushered in.
