Angra Mainyu / Ahriman
The Destructive Spirit, Lord of Darkness
The primordial force of evil, chaos, and destruction. Angra Mainyu (later known as Ahriman) is the eternal adversary of Ahura Mazda, who chose Druj (the Lie) over Asha (Truth) at the beginning of time. Though powerful, he is destined for ultimate defeat in the Frashokereti.
Attributes & Domains
Nature & Origin
The Primordial Choice
At the beginning of time, two primordial spirits existed in the void: Spenta Mainyu (Holy Spirit, aspect of Ahura Mazda) and Angra Mainyu (Destructive Spirit). When they encountered each other, they were presented with a fundamental choice: to follow Asha (Truth/Order) or Druj (Lie/Chaos).
Spenta Mainyu chose truth, life, and goodness. Angra Mainyu chose falsehood, death, and evil. This choice was not predetermined - it was made through free will, establishing the cosmic conflict that defines existence.
Limited Nature
Unlike Ahura Mazda, Angra Mainyu is:
- Ignorant: Cannot see the future, acts blindly in malice
- Finite: Has a beginning and will have an end
- Parasitic: Cannot create, only corrupt what Ahura Mazda has made
- Self-defeating: Evil ultimately consumes itself
- Doomed: Destined for final defeat and annihilation

The Assault on Creation
When Ahura Mazda created the perfect world, Angra Mainyu attacked it in a violent assault. Unable to create himself, he corrupted Ahura Mazda's creations:
The Six Counter-Creations
- Against Sky: Created demons that brought holes and tears in the firmament
- Against Water: Polluted pure waters with salt, poison, and disease
- Against Earth: Created deserts, barren lands, and earthquakes
- Against Plants: Created poisonous and harmful plants, brought blight and decay
- Against Animals: Created predators, venomous creatures, and disease-bearing vermin
- Against Humanity: Introduced death, disease, suffering, and moral corruption
Specific Evils Created
- Death (Marg): The ultimate corruption of life
- Winter: Cold, barrenness, and death of vegetation
- Disease: 99,999 diseases to afflict humanity
- Az (Greed): Insatiable hunger and covetousness
- Aeshma (Wrath): Violence and destructive fury
- Sexual sin: Corruption of sacred generation
- Doubt: Confusion and loss of faith
The Daeva Army
Angra Mainyu commands legions of daevas (demons), evil spirits that oppose the good creation. The arch-demons include:
- Azhi Dahaka: Three-headed dragon serpent, destroyer of truth
- Aeshma: Demon of wrath, fury, and violence
- Az: Demoness of greed, gluttony, and lust
- Akoman: Demon of evil mind, opposing Vohu Manah (Good Mind)
- Indar: Demon of apostasy and doubt
- Saurva: Demon of tyranny and oppression
- Taromaiti: Demon of false piety and arrogance
- Zairicha: Demon of poison and toxins
Each arch-demon opposes one of the Amesha Spentas, creating a cosmic battle of opposing forces.
The Cosmic Timeline
The 12,000 Year Cycle
Ahura Mazda set a limited time for the cosmic struggle, divided into four periods of 3,000 years each:
- First 3,000 Years (Spiritual Creation): Ahura Mazda creates the spiritual prototypes. Angra Mainyu lies stunned in confusion.
- Second 3,000 Years (Material Creation): Ahura Mazda manifests creation physically. Angra Mainyu attacks, introducing evil into the world.
- Third 3,000 Years (Mixture): Good and evil intermixed. Zoroaster is born and reveals the true religion. Humanity chooses sides.
- Final 3,000 Years (Separation): Evil progressively weakened. Culminates in Frashokereti (Final Renovation), when Angra Mainyu and all evil are completely destroyed.
The Final Defeat
In the Frashokereti, Angra Mainyu's ultimate fate is annihilation:
- The savior figures (Saoshyants) will be born, culminating in the final savior who defeats evil
- All souls will be resurrected and judged
- The world will be purified by molten metal that burns away all evil
- Angra Mainyu and his daevas will be cast through the molten metal and utterly destroyed
- Evil will cease to exist - not imprisoned, but completely annihilated
- The universe will be restored to its original perfect state
- Death, disease, suffering, and all corruption will be permanently removed
Important: Unlike many dualistic systems, Zoroastrianism teaches that evil is not eternal. Angra Mainyu's power is temporary, and his complete destruction is certain.
