Garmr - The Hellhound
The monstrous hound that guards the gates of Helheim. When Ragnarok comes, his howl will signal the beginning of the end.
Guardian of Death's Gate
Garmr is the fearsome hound chained in the cave Gnipahellir at the entrance to Helheim. Blood drips constantly from his jaws, and his howl is said to be the most terrifying sound in all the Nine Realms. He guards the gates of the underworld, preventing the living from entering and the dead from leaving.
At Ragnarok, Garmr will break free from his bonds. His howling will announce the beginning of the final battle. He will face Tyr, the one-handed god of war, in single combat, and they will kill each other. Some scholars believe Garmr may be another name for Fenrir, or perhaps his brother.
