🌌 Jewish Cosmology

Creation, Worlds, and the Afterlife

Jewish cosmology encompasses the structure of creation from Genesis, the mystical understanding of multiple worlds and realms, and beliefs about the soul's journey after death. From the six days of creation to the world to come, these teachings reveal the divine architecture of existence.

🌍 Creation (Bereishit)

The Six Days of Creation

God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh, establishing the pattern of Shabbat.

  • Day 1: Light and darkness
  • Day 2: Sky and waters separated
  • Day 3: Land, seas, and vegetation
  • Day 4: Sun, moon, and stars
  • Day 5: Birds and sea creatures
  • Day 6: Land animals and humanity
  • Day 7: Shabbat - God rested

Creation by Divine Speech

God created through speaking: "Let there be light." The power of divine speech (Ma'amar) brought all existence into being from nothing (yesh me'ayin).

10 Utterances: God spoke ten times during creation, corresponding to the ten Sefirot

Kabbalistic: Hebrew letters are the building blocks of creation

Creation of Humanity

"Let us make man in our image, after our likeness." Humanity created in God's image (tzelem Elohim), given dominion over earth.

Adam & Eve: First humans in Gan Eden

Divine Image: Intellect, free will, moral capacity

Purpose: Partner with God in perfecting creation
